FLAT ROOFING SYSTEMS

FLAT ROOFING SYSTEMS: Proven Protection from the Top Down

Flat roofs are a staple of commercial buildings and many modern residential designs — and choosing the right system is critical for performance, longevity, and energy efficiency.

BUILT-UP ROOFING (BUR):

The Time-Tested Workhorse Often referred to as “hot mop” roofs, BUR systems consist of multiple layers of asphalt and reinforced felts, alternated and finished with gravel or a reflective cap sheet. This method has stood the test of time, delivering reliable protection for over a century. Modern BUR variations include SBS-modified systems for added flexibility and strength. These roofs are especially suited for buildings requiring a robust, redundant waterproofing system that can handle foot traffic, heavy equipment, and extreme UV exposure.

SINGLE-PLY MEMBRANES:

High-Performance, Lightweight Solutions Single-ply membrane systems — such as TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin), PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride), and EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) – offer lightweight, energy-efficient, and highly reflective roofing options. TPO and PVC are heat-welded for watertight seams and ideal for hot climates, while EPDM offers excellent durability and weather resistance in colder environments. These systems install faster than BUR and are often preferred for their clean, modern appearance and long-term performance with lower maintenance requirements.
